8 Overhyped Movies We Can Consider Fairly Now The Dust Has Settled
5. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2013)
The Original Reaction...rating: 4
It always struck me as rather bizarre to think that nobody enjoyed The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey as much as I did, which was the feeling I got when I hit the internet in the aftermath of having seen it - lukewarm reviews and mixed fan reaction told me my reaction had veered somewhat from the mainstream. And I although there were some noticeable problems throughout (pacing and too much CGI), for the most part I felt that Peter Jackson captured the magic of Tolkien's classic whilst factoring in the world he himself built for The Lord of the Rings. Bravo. Now The Dust Has Settled...rating: 4
What else to say about this one except for the fact I'm still convinced the naysayers are wrong? Almost a year has passed, and yet looking back at all the overhyped movies released in 2013, An Unexpected Journey was the one that best-matched my expectations, though I'm aware I'm still in the minority. But given that Jackson was forced to adapt a book into the world of his Lord of the Ring's movies that didn't really match up to it in tone, this is a major accomplishment. Less CGI would have been nice, sure, but as far as needlessly overstretched adaptations go, The Hobbit still never feels like it's treading water - and Martin Freeman really is the perfect Bilbo.
