8 Possession Horror Movies That Broke All The Rules
4. The Wailing
Across its two-and-a-half-hour runtime, The Wailing floats between a bunch of different horror sub-genres. However, it's demonic possession that takes the focus in the final stretch, when it's revealed that a strange virus sweeping across a South Korean town that's causing the infected to go mad and kill their families is actually the cause of a demonic drifter.
What breaks the rules is just how this demonic possession is presented. As mentioned, at first it appears closer to a zombie-like virus, and the drifter himself has to perform a strange ritual every time he takes a new host.
On top of this misdirection is another layer of misdirection, as the real cause of the possession seems to be coming from a ghost taking on the form of a creepy young woman who's seen around the crime scenes.
The focus isn't just on one poor victim who needs an exorcist either, but a string of unlucky souls who are targeted, including the main protagonist's young daughter.
The Wailing constantly has you guessing, and it pulls no punches with its grisly, terrifying finale.
