Robert Zemeckis' masterful 1997 sci-fi film Contact climaxes with Dr. Ellie Arroway (Jodie Foster) entering a mysterious, four-ring machine which allows her to travel through a series of wormholes.

As singular as it looks, the machine was originally conceived by concept artist Steve Burg while working on Terminator 2: Judgment Day six years prior.

The concept was initially created for the Time Displacement Device (aka time machine) planned to be featured in an extended part of the opening future war sequence, but after James Cameron ended up scrapping it, Burg recycled it for another ground-breaking sci-fi classic.

As a nod to this, though, 2015's Terminator Genisys did incorporate the ring design into its brief depiction of the Time Displacement Device.
