8 Reasons Avengers: Age Of Ultron Is The Beginning Of The End For Marvel

2. It Can No Longer Surprise You

Movie trailers give too much away. That's not a ground-breaking observation, just a cold-hard fact any internet-based movie fan just has to kinda accept. Avengers: Age Of Ultron wasn't the worst example of this, but it still veered into overkill territory, with pretty much every set piece detailed and the broad plot beats impossible to ignore.

That blanket advertising can somewhat explain why there were minimal shocking moments in Avengers: Age Of Ultron, but really only distracts from the real problem; there weren't actually any surprises. Yes, The Vision is created, Quicksilver dies and the New Avengers are formed, but they're hardly Earth-shattering moments that weren't easy to guess before.

There's already minimal tension in terms of death in the MCU (you could work out Quicksilver would be the one to pop his trainers as he was the only member without a scheduled sequel appearance), but, thanks to knowing what films are on the horizon, it's hard to have shockers of any other form either. When you know the release order and the myriad of publicly advertised contracts, there's no chance of a hidden Easter egg setting up a previously unexpected movie, or a surprise cameo. Heck, following the lack of Spider-Man in Age Of Ultron, the only way a Marvel can actually shock you now is by not setting up the future.
