8 Reasons Why Rian Johnson Should Direct Phantom Of The Opera
7. Classical Operatic Influences
Johnson is more than just a fan of Broadway musicals such as Phantom of the Opera, he's also a fan of actual operas. This love is so extreme, he went so far as to include references to the classical operas of Wagner, such as Siegfried, in the final act of The Last Jedi.
As the title would suggest, Phantom does revolve around an opera and Johnson's love of that particular artform would only enhance the overall experience. As written by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Phantom as a show is also an opera in and of itself. The drama, the love triangle, the tragedy, it's all there.
A more operatic viewpoint would lend more gravitas to the central drama and serve to enhance the Shakespearian qualities found in the original production. The end result would be a more believably fleshed-out in-narrative opera and the chance for those influence to bleed into the story as a whole.
