8 Reasons Why Rian Johnson Should Direct Phantom Of The Opera
2. Anything Is Better Than Schumacher
Time to address the elephant in the room.
In 2004, a film adaptation of the play was released. This film was produced by Webber himself and directed by none other than he of Bat-Nipple infamy, Joel Schumacher. The film had a litany of problems, the root of which was that Schumacher failed to understand the story he was telling.
From the micro to the macro, this adaptation got just about everything wrong. The music was ruined, Gerad Butler (who had never sung before) as the Phantom was a poor choice, to say the least, and the story was water-down and made as mundane as humanly possible.
This was the exact wrong direction to take the film in and anyone overseeing a future attempt would need to be acutely aware of just how awful of a film this was.
Luckily, Johnson briefly touched on this during his conversations on Twitter, stating that he was not a fan of the film, even going so far as to call it "heartbreakingly bad".
