8 Reasons Wolverine Is The Most Disappointing Part Of X-Men: Apocalypse

4. Its Proposed Impact On The Timeline Is Insignificant

"I will say, it’s not simple. There’s something more pivotal that occurs with that. It hints to a sequence that again fits within the canon of all six movies, and the birth of a new direction. It’s not insignificant, nor is it simply just a throw-in."

That's a quote from Bryan Singer about the Wolverine sequence after it was revealed in the film's third trailer. Doesn't quite fit the film, does it?

One of the most baffling things about the sequence is that it doesn't do anything to explain how the two timelines of the X-Men universe work. There's similarities to both what happened in the original continuity (Logan's escape looks similar - but, crucially, not identical - to the flashes he has in X-2) and ideas that forge forward into something new (Jean gives Logan some of his memories), which means it almost seems to think it exists in both; Scott commenting "We'll never see him again" at the end of it all only works that way.

This could fit the new-future end of Days Of Future Past and Beast describing time being like an unhalting river - you can cause ripples, but not halt the flow - but that's both from the previous film and don't really chime with Singer's claims; it's incredibly insignificant if that's all it is.
