2. Rambo (2008) 20 Years
It does not take much to describe what the Rambo franchise has become. Guns, explosions, and killing. There's a lot it. The first film of the franchise, First Blood, actually had much more going for it, as per most premiere films of an abused franchise. It was well-paced and committed to tones and themes without losing track of it all in violence. Much like Rocky, Stallone put on a confident performance in the original. But flash forward to two decades since the third and most recent Rambo film, and you have Stallone taking over the director's chair as the war vet lead finds himself assisting aid workers in Burma. This time you have to wonder if Rambo had found another geopolitical event to create a commentary about or just another battlefield to litter the movie screen with blood and bodies.
Was it worth it? To be honest the answer is "no". The wait was not worth it. Given that every film Stallone attaches himself to is just another excuse to take advantage of a portion of the world's unhealthy obsession for mindless violence just to grab a paycheck, Rambo seems only another catalyst to that. Stallone could make any film, as he does, to become a palate for his bloodbath sessions. He only fell back on Rambo to garner an audience to pay to see it based on familiarity alone. The movie may have supported some sort of structure outside of just appealing to carnage, but it's hard to say if that is enough to say 20 years was worth a wait for a new Rambo adventure.
