8 Roles That Prove Andy Serkis Is The Most Important Actor Of His Generation
4. William Hare - Burke And Hare (2010)
It's a wonder that Serkis hasn't taken on more roles in straight comedies, as his malleable expressionism seems perfectly suited for the comedy genre. 2010's Burke and Hare is an interesting dark comedy from director John Landis, based on the West Port murders in 1828 Edinburgh, and it features Serkis co-starring with Simon Pegg as the titular heroes. The film is far from perfect, and at times seems more like a forgettable theatre production than a feature film. Still, Serkis is right at home alongside Pegg and the numerous other comedians on hand, and he takes on the shared leading man duties with aplomb. Take the dark, painful tragedy of Gollum's split-personality scenes or the imprisoned melancholy of Ian Brady and hold it up to any of Hare's hijinks in this film (especially the hilarious sex scene) and you'll be surprised that one actor is capable of displaying such a broad range of emotion.
