6. Predator
OK, so they attempted to reboot Predator a few years back with Adrien Brody (who was terrifyingly stacked) and Laurence Fishburne (who was hilariously unhinged) and to my mind, it was a pretty good film. It didnt take itself too seriously, it had a few archetypal action characters samurai-sword-wielding Yakuza, anyone? some good set-pieces and it was good to see the Predators back in the jungle after the city sequel mishap with Danny Glover. But it didnt quite take off, and now the Predator franchise is back where it was down with the dead men, and occasionally given a jolt by a risible Alien vs. Predator flick. There have been mumblings about doing something with a sequel, but as of the moment it appears as if the franchise is on life-support. Yet a reboot would be a great idea, if only because the team behind Predators already want to take the whole franchise in a more thought-provoking direction, which was already hinted at in the Predators film itself. Predators director Nimrod Antal has spoken of a desire to explore the culture of the Predators on their home planet, something we got close to doing in the first reboot when we saw their fighting hierarchy and warrior rituals, and that excites the hell out of me. The Predator as a monster does not deserve to be consigned to the annals of history quite yet, but what the failed sequels have pointed out is that it isnt enough to serve the audience with a straightforward extraterrestrial slasher anymore. While it may have worked for the first film, the Predators been around a while now, and a deeper look into the monster and its world might be exactly whats needed.
