8 Sci-Fi Inventions Ruined By Science

7. Hover Board

Lightsaber Vader

This one hurts... and it's basically down to infrastructure.

Let’s go back to the future of Back to the Future for a moment. What’s the one thing we all wanted besides everyone’s favorite flux capacitor operated flying vehicle? Uh, huh, well, unless we travel to a designated location to use it, the hover board is not going to happen. Much like the flying car, it’s simply too inconvenient for practical use.

The one big issue with the hover board in the film was that it couldn’t work over water. Similarly, the one big issue with reality is how ineffective the technology would be over the majority of our existing surfaces.

The companies of Lexus and Arx Pax each have a hover board in production, but their respective technologies, albeit awesome, are limited to operating across a conductive material. As cool as all copper roads and sidewalks would be and all, anyone know how to handle the whole lightning sitch?

Hey, at least in the film Mattel's design still technically hovered over water, even if it couldn’t be put into motion.
