Love it or hate it, I Am Legend has become known as a somewhat infamous film. The movie’s vampiric, zombie-ish monsters are now known as being sort of goofy-looking. CGI has come forward in leaps and bounds since 2007, and their elastic-y, plastic-looking faces aren’t exactly the peak of visual excellence anymore.

In the beginning though the monsters looked entirely different, and that is because they were going to be played by actors wearing prosthetics and makeup. This would’ve lent a more human look to them, reminding us that they were people before they were monsters.

Without the goofy CGI and other time-saving, slightly misguided changes (yes, including the ending), the monsters would have been far more impactful in some ways. Especially in line with the messaging from the movie’s source material novel, having humanised beasts could have been really smart and equally as terrifying.
