Over and over throughout production this movie has been resolutely stated as a reboot of the franchise and not a direct continuation, so why did the trailer start with an slow opening that leaned heavily on the legacy of the original movie? It could, of course, be all about nostalgia, hoping that reminding everyone of Venkman and co. will win over sceptical fans (didn't work), but what if Feig's secretly made a legacyquel; a late-in-the-day sequel that serves as a soft reboot of the franchise while still existing as part of the original world? It would certainly fit the current trend in modern blockbuster franchises - Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Terminator, Rocky, Tron and Vacation have all pulled the legacyquel trick in recent years - and would give sense of purpose to the movie - like other examples it can directly deal with the series' continued relevance And that's saying nothing for the prospect of cameos from the original cast (who, incidentally, have signed on for the movie). Beyond tricksy trailer editing, there is a scene that actually points towards this being the case; when Patty disappoints the group by her uncle's car being a hearse, she defends it by pointing out that "it's a Cadillac". Maybe the joke is just that she's missing the bigger picture, but what if she's explicitly gone to find a vehicle that's reminiscent of the team on which the girls are basing themselves?
