8 Signs We're Reaching Saturation Point With Superhero Movies

2. The Dilution Of The Big Cinema Blockbuster

Superhero films, if done right, can be the event films of the year. The chances are we all had Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, X Men: Days Of Future Past and Guardians Of The Galaxy pencilled into our calendars for 2014. But did we have room for others? Take Tom Cruise's Edge of Tomorrow which has just been released to with critics claiming it is one of the best blockbuster films of the year. Yet its box office return has been somewhat modest with an opening weekend taking of $30 million in the US, even if it did better overseas. The truth is it didn't attract the same kind of buzz any of this year's big superhero movies did. That's not to say superhero movies can't be big blockbusters in themselves but they aren't going to stand out if we get countless versions each year. In 2004, Spider-Man 2 competed against the likes of The Day After Tomorrow and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. A year later Batman Begins competed with King Kong and Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith. We're not at the stage yet where there are so many superhero movies, they are dominating the blockbuster market. But as this year proved, superhero movies are on the increase. Again we have to ask, how much is too much?
