8 Startling Early Versions Of Your Favourite Pixar Films
4. Wall-E Has To Save A Damaged EVE - Wall-E
Most of these examples come early in the production of the films where ideas jump from solid gold to the rubbish bin quicker than Dory loses her memory. Yet in this case we very nearly got the dropped version in the final film.
The concept of Wall-E has existed since before Toy Story was unleashed on the world; originally known as Trash Planet, the idea of a stranded garbage crushing robot was conceived at the same dinner as A Bug's Life and Monsters, Inc. Despite this, it was only after Andrew Stanton finished Finding Nemo that he returned to the idea. Realising the existing concept could only really work as a first act, he flirted with having EVE sent down by aliens (who in one draft would eventually be revealed to be incredibly devolved humans). Dropping the twist, the film slowly turned into the eco love story everyone adores.
This wasn't the end of Wall-E's plot development however; the third act originally had EVE mortally wounded by Auto, with Wall-E having to save her. It's a nice idea, but we already know WALL-E is totally devoted to EVE and this way risks their relationship looking like one based off gratitude. The switch was made for this exact reason, but not before the sequence of an injured EVE almost being ejected from the Axiom by the Wall-As could be almost fully rendered; some of it even appears in the trailer.
