Stay with me here, I promise this is... something. It appears that the only thing to tie in Stephen King's intense story of a man trapped and tortured by a superfan and the christmastime favourite of a human elf spreading festive joy is James Caan plays characters living in New York City in both, but that's more than enough for the internet to run away with a theory that thrives on coincidence. Right, here we go.

James Caan plays Paul Sheldon in Misery, who's obviously pretty traumatised after having being hobbled and having to murder the obsessed Annie Wilkes in an act of self defence.

He changes his name to Walter Hobbs to start a new life away from the one he lived as a famous romance author, instead deciding to channel his love for literature into a publishing house, but this makes him unhappy. He becomes the aggravated and bitter man of Elf, who's also played by James Caan, so naturally has an uncanny likeness to that of Sheldon.

Walter is on the naughty list for being selfish, which is pretty understandable considering how reaching out to a fan got him tied to a bed and trapped away from the outside world, almost permanently.

That by the end of the movie he's had to have a supernatural event to get him to open up again seems fair considering the tragedies of his lives, and of course, he's happy enough to turn to writing again - opening his own publishing company that sells books without his name anywhere near them. 'Buddy Hobbs' has that job this time.
