What It Could Win: Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography & Best Supporting Actress Charlize Theron Now we're getting to the films with a real shot. Its safe to say no one saw this coming. Mad Max was the surprise of the year and it could be a huge hit at the Dolby Theatre. Eerily beautiful, Mad Max is an amazing piece of film making and although the film is essentially one long car chase, that doesnt deter from that fact it is a technical masterpiece. The big story, however, is Charlize Therons dominating performance as Furiosa. Theron absolutely demands the spotlight and steals every scene in juggernaut fashion. She is tough, resilient and defiant deserving of a place amongst the likes of John McClane, Harry Callahan and Max himself as one of the best action heroes in film. Very few were expecting Fury Road to be robust, progressive and challenging feminist film it was (lets be honest its ridiculous that this is a progressive film in this day and age), and with the recent press around inequality in pay and equal rights, expect to see a deserved push for Theron to get the nomination, and hopefully the win she deserves. Dark Horse Nominations: Best Picture & Best Directing This tornado of a film isnt just worthy of the Best Picture Nomination, but George Millers absolute marathon he ran to get this film created could be recognised. Miller, who storyboarded over 3,000 images and brought nearly 500 hours of footage down to two should be acknowledged for his resolve, dedication to his craft and tenacity. He fought through development hell, 9/11 censorship and Mel Gibsons lunacy to bring together an incredible feat of filmmaking, and it shouldn't go unnoticed in the eyes of the Academy. If the Cannes audience is anything to go by, Mad Max could be as big a hit in the Oscars as it was in France.
