8 Theories About Spider-Man's Role In Captain America: Civil War

6. He's (Part Of) The Reason For The Sokovia Accords

The Sokovia Accords are serving as the film version of the Superhero Registration Act, which is what causes the inter-hero conflict in the comic book story. The Accords won't be a direct parallel though, focusing more on holding superheroes to account in the wake of the mass destruction in Age of Ultron. However, one theory suggests that there could be another cause, and it would see Spider-Man fulfilling a different role from the comics. There, what propels the Act into, erm, action is an incident involving the New Warriors, a new group of heroes who try to help, but end up causing hundreds of deaths. The idea here, then, is that Spider-Man is a young hero and overeager to prove himself. He'll go to deal with a new threat, bigger than anything he's faced so far, but ends up causing mass destruction that, when coupled with the events of Age of Ultron, sparks a public backlash against superheroes and creates the Sokovia Accords.
