8 Times Film Stars Took On Social 'Norms' On Sexuality
1. The Many Efforts Of George Takei
There are few voices in Hollywood that are louder on the issue of LGBT rights than that of George Takei.
Although it was a long-known fact among Star Trek fans anyway, Takei revealed that he was gay in a magazine interview in 2005 when same-sex marriage was vetoed in California.
He and his husband Brad Takei (né Altman) became the first same-sex couple to apply for a marriage licence in West Hollywood. They had been together since the 80s.
In 2006, he talked about his life as a gay Japanese American, his relationship with Altman, his work with Frontrunners and Star Trek on his 'Equality Trek' tour in the US.
Outside of his personal life, he has publicly called out individuals for their homophobic comments and actions. He is a spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign's Coming Out Project and, in 2014, he received the GLAAD Vito Russo Award.
And this post only really scratches the surface of the inspiring work he has done, things he has said and actions he has taken to make being LGBT a societal norm.
