8 Times Movie Directors Were Total Jerks To Their Actors
2. James Cameron - The Abyss
Production of James Cameron's The Abyss was famously troubled, with the director himself even saying he never wanted to experience anything like it ever again. Actors, who were forced to shoot scenes underwater in difficult conditions, nicknamed the film "The Abuse" and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio stormed off set at one point, refusing to participate in reshoots and accusing Cameron of treating his cast and crew like "animals".
The worst story of all concerns actor Ed Harris. While filming a scene in which his character nearly drowns, Harris assumed that he wasn't in any real danger, but the scene took a terrifying turn when the star ran out of oxygen and really did start to suffocate. Apparently, Cameron wanted to capture real fear on film.
As you might imagine, Harris didn't take too kindly to this. Allegedly, he stormed up to the director, punched him in the face, and promised to never work with him again. Harris, along with Mastrantonio, later disowned the film and refused to talk about it in interviews.
