8 Ways Indiana Jones Almost Turned Out Completely Different
6. He Was Almost An Alcoholic
Despite the fact that he spends the sum of four movies punching, shooting and generally killing people, Indiana Jones is - generally speaking - quite a wholesome character. He didn't start out anything close to that, though. Not only did Lucas and Spielberg envision Indy as a sleazy playboy who only cares about himself, but - at one point - there were also plans to make him an alcoholic, too. That's to say, Spielberg imagined Indy as somebody akin to Humphrey Bogart's character Fred C. Dobbs in John Huston's classic western adventure movie The Treasure Of The Sierra Madre - a hard drinker who spends much of the movie swigging on whatever liquor he can get his hands on. Lucas objected on this matter, though:
"He has to be a person we can look up to. We're doing a role model for little kids, so we have to be careful. We need someone who's honest and true and trusting."
He eventually won Spielberg round on this front, and Indy's lust for alcohol was ultimately abandoned. It appears as though Marion became the big drinker instead, hm?
