9 Ways The Amazing Spider-Man Almost Turned Out Awesome
9. Mary Jane In The First Film
Everyone knows Shailene Woodley shot scenes as Mary-Jane Watson for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 that were ultimately cut from the film. A shooting version of the script reveals this wasn't much more than a small role to set her up as a love interest in the planned third film, so while many have lamented a talented actress having her performance removed, it's probably for the best, stopping the film getting even more bogged down with endless groundwork.
What's less well known is that Ms. Watson was originally going to play a part in the first film. Marc Webb's original plan, as evidenced from early casting reports, were that both MJ and Gwen Stacy were going to appear, making the whole Peter Parker side of events a love triangle.
This ties into the early plan to have the reboot be something of an attempt to ape Twilight, although given how much better defined the Spidey trio are, and how good the chemistry between Stone and Garfield was, there's every chance this could have actually worked. Quite when this aspect was removed is unclear, although as it was rather early in production, it was probably about the time the whole shebang with Peter's parents took the main focus.
