8 Widespread Movie "Facts" That Are Totally Untrue

4. Milk Was Added To The Water Droplets In Singin' In The Rain So They Showed Up On Camera

Singin In The Rain If you've ever sat down and watched Singin' in the Rain with another human being, chances are that either you or your co-watcher uttered the following statement: "Did you know that they added milk to the rain so that it showed up better on camera?" To which, of course, you or your co-watcher presumably replied with something along the lines of: "Oh, really? That's cool." After all, what is there to doubt about such a statement? It seems to make sense, right? The unfortunate news for everybody who - at one point - said these words, then? You lied. Not on purpose, of course, but you did. You lied, gosh darn it. You didn't check the facts, and now we've got this milk-based myth on the loose. But you're not the biggest culprit, of course - that would be the person who conjured this little "fact" up originally. In actuality (and according to both Gene Kelly and the co-director of the movie), the effect was achieved by backlighting the rain (it's super hard to film rain). No milk was, in fact, used at any point.
