9 Actors Who Haven't Topped Their Breakout Performance
5. Scarlett Johansson As Charlotte - Lost In Translation
Easily the most popular, well-known actress on the planet right now, Scarlett Johansson may have delivered some strong performances, but it's still her breakthrough performance in Lost In Translation that serves as her best. She's beguiling in Under The Skin - a film which many would suggest is her finest hour - and strangely effective as only a voice in Spike Jonez's Her, but neither quite top her touching, understated work in Sofia Coppola's modern classic. Opposite an equally great Bill Murray, ScarJo plays a a lonely, isolated young American holed up in a grand Tokyo hotel. Known only as "Charlotte", the actress puts in a fine, layered performance in the film which truly marked her out as one of cinema's best contemporary stars. (She's semi-broke-through, if that's a thing, in Ghost World two years earlier). Johansson has plenty of time to top her breakthrough performance, and being the most in-demand actress alive will no-doubt see her accrue role after interesting role, but, right now, Lost In Translation remains her best work to date.
