9 Awesome Movies That Were Shot In Secret
4. The Visit
Though M. Night Shyamalan's 2015 found footage horror film might not be as celebrated as most of the movies on this list, it did mark a major return to form for the maligned director, serving up his most satisfying piece of work in almost 15 years.
After several of his bigger-budget studio ventures tanked with audiences and critics alike, Shyamalan smartly went back to his lower-budget roots, self-funding The Visit to ensure maximum creative control.
While Shyamalan did make vague tweets about the project during shooting - which was called "Sundowning" at the time - virtually nothing was known about it until many months later, and it didn't finally release until around 18 months after principal photography had been completed.
The film earned Shyamalan his best reviews in years and was widely accepted to be a return to form for the director, which he duly followed up with the even better Split, which again reveled in the secrecy of its production (namely that final Bruce Willis cameo).
