9 Female DC Superheroes Who Also Deserve Solo Movies
What other ladies of DC now deserve to follow Wonder Woman into the spotlight?
Wonder Woman marks a major shift for the modern comic book movie landscape. It is the first big-budget film of its kind with a female lead and a female director, and people seem to be loving it.
It's surprising that a franchise that has been so testosterone-fuelled like the DCEU is the first to nail the female superhero, but Warner Bros and DC have not only managed it, they're already planning for the future.
As both Marvel and Sony try to launch their own superheroines with Captain Marvel and a Black Cat/Silver Sable team-up (yeah, good luck with that one), DC already has a slate of movies in development that don't feature a Y chromosome in the lead.
A sequel to Wonder Woman is already coming, Harley Quinn is going to team up with her gal pals in Gotham City Sirens, and nerd god himself Joss Whedon is taking on the task of bringing Batgirl to the big screen (because it's about time we were invited to forget that Alicia Silverstone ever happened).
Even beyond those strikes forward, there are plenty of other superheroines in the DC Universe who deserve a chance in the spotlight...
9. Zatanna
Trained in traditional stage magic as well as the mystical arts by her father Zatara, Zatanna has nearly limitless possibilities in regards to what kind of spells she can conjure up. She can control the elements, transform objects, heal people, and even control minds; all by simply saying words backwards.
Given the chance to star in her own solo movie, Zatanna could easily be DC's answer to Doctor Strange. Perhaps we could delve a little into her origins, before going on an adventure to rescue her father as she did in her earliest appearances.
It could also work as a prequel to the long-in-development Justice League Dark movie, and could even be released afterwards like Wonder Woman was to Dawn of Justice if that team-up movie finally gets off the ground, but giving Zatanna her chance in the spotlight might be good way of explaining how magic works in the DCEU before delving heavily into the subject as JLD often does.
If you're looking to check out Zatanna for yourself in other media, she's been numerous appearances in animated form. She's appeared in multiple episodes of Batman: The Animated Series and Justice League Unlimited, and she even became a regular on Young Justice during the second half of the first series.
