9 Films That Only Make Sense Thanks To Fan Theories
1. Inception: Cobb's Wedding Ring Is His Totem
Inception was only going to end one way - with lots of ambiguity.
After boggling the audience's minds with its dreams-within-dreams concept, there's no way it was going to start making sense in the final act. Visionary director Christopher Nolan has never been a fan of unchallenging narratives.
But of you prefer your endings without the mystery, this fan theory attempts to provide an unequivocal explanation regarding the fate of Leo DiCaprio's Cobb.
Throughout the film, the viewer is led to believe that Cobb's 'totem' - items the extractors use to establish whether they are in a dream or the real world - is a spinning top which belonged to his late wife, Mallorie.
The top spins on forever in the dream world but falls flat in reality, but during the final scene, the audience doesn't get to see which position it's in, leaving it open to interpretation whether the happy ending actually happened.
But eagle-eyed viewers have pointed out the top might not be Cobb's totem. They claim it's his wedding ring, which he's only seen wearing in the subconscious scenes.
The absence of the wedding band in the real world, coupled with the fact it's never explicitly stated that the top is a totem could mean there's something to this theory.
So if you want to separate the sequences which actually happened from those that were dreamed up, look for the ring. It's just a shame the viewer doesn't get to see whether Leo is wearing it in that final scene.
