9 Films That Ruined The Book

8. Gulliver's Travels

Rob Letterman's adaptation of Jonathan Swift's 18th-century novel opened in cinemas around the same time as Alice In Wonderland, but garnered reviews that were far less varied or on the fence. While critics had praised Alice In Wonderland for its visuals, they universally panned Gulliver's Travels for being one of the laziest, most uninspired films of the decade. The film wobbles half-heartedly on a paint-by-numbers performance from Jack Black, while the actual storyline of the film pays very little mind to the novel it is based on. The humour is reduced to the lowest common denominator, while even the visual effects are watered down just enough to be passable so long as you don't look too closely. The book is a clever, subtle satire on human nature, but there is none of that intelligence present on screen. Although the film may potentially be excused under the assumption that the target audience won't really care about that, it's nevertheless a crying shame that a generation of youngsters will henceforth mistake a literary classic for "that rubbish Jack Black film with the little people in it".
