9 Gloriously Trashy Movies

6. Nude On The Moon (1961)

Nude On The Moon Poster01 Co-directed by Doris Wishman and Raymond Phelan, the film was made in a more innocent age, before full frontal nudity became de rigeur with exploitation movie directors. The film could be called a 'nudie-cutie' as it exploits the naturism that was so predominant in Z Grade Movies at that time. The directors transpose nudism onto the moon - that's the key twist. Two scientists build a rocket to take them to the moon. Whenever they get there, they discover that the moon is populated by a tribe of telepathic, nudist women (although they don't go the whole hog with their nudity - they keep their knickers on). One of the men falls in love with the Queen of the colony, the other guy takes lots of photos. But alas, when they return to earth, they have left the camera behind! Nude on the Moon is an amusing and surprisingly innocent film given the fact that Wishman is involved. Often accused of sleaziness, the film is rather tame and all you get to see is bare boobies. I love the fact that the women spout stupid antennae on their heads and communicate telepathically - even when they are a mere foot apart from each other. I think that the telepathy arc was a shortcut to save money - they could record without live sound and tape the speaking later. This makes the film fabulously trashy and a total hoot.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
