9 Greatest Movies Set In Scotland

6. Highlander (1986)

Highlander Highlander's decidedly '80s fashions will be too much for some, but many viewers will find much to enjoy in this action-packed fantasy movie. The movie's stunning Scottish landscapes and brilliant soundtrack by Queen make the perfect combination; songs such as Princes of the Universe and Who Wants to Live Forever were written especially for the film and are used here to great effect. The movie tells the story of Connor Macleod, played by Christopher Lambert. Born in a Scottish village in the Highlands in the 16th century, Connor somehow remains alive and well in 1980s New York. Cutting between scenes of Connor in twentieth-century America and in sixteenth-century Scotland, we learn that Connor is an Immortal, one of several who must battle against each other across time, because in the end 'there can only be one.' The film chronicles these battles, but also examines the heartache and difficulties Connor experiences as a result of continuing to live whilst the ones he loves grow old and die. Highlander quickly became a cult classic and was followed by a whole host of sequels. The original Highlander is far from perfect, yet many will find it both entertaining and moving. Undoubtedly the movie shows off Scotland's lochs, moors and mountains to their very best, making the movie worth seeing.
