9 Horror Movie Victims Who Gave Up... And Survived

6. Father Karras - The Exorcist

During the The Exorcist's climax, Father Karras and Father Merrin do all their can to expel the demon, Pazuzu, from Regan's body. When Karras realises the exorcism isn't working, he lashes out at Pazuzu, ordering the demonic entity to possess him instead.

After it enters Karras' body, he reasons that he can send Pazuzu back to hell if he takes his own life while it's inside him. Although the hellish creature attempts to use Karras' body to murder Regan, he wrangles control over himself long enough to jump out of the window, slamming into the staircase below.

Karras' friend, Fr. Dyer, gives him the last rites just as he draws his final breath. As horrible as it was to watch Karras bleed out on the steps, you can take some solace, knowing he freed Regan from her torment and defeated Pazuzu once and for all.

Or so it would appear. Even though Karras did all he could to take his own life, the malevolent force lurking inside him wasn't going to give up so easily. In Exorcist III: Legion, it's revealed that Pazuzu used his dark power to keep Karras alive, and used his body to continue his killing spree for years.
