5. Sterile Romance
Easily one of the biggest complaints about Nolan's films is that despite broaching the subject of love and romance fairly often, he can't seem to ever do it very well. The films are for the large part sexless in the most literal sense; there is no physical or emotional warmth to the characters, making it hard to buy into the relationships. Nolan's scripting denies the actors agency to demonstrate their chemistry with one another, and the result is that the romance ends up feeling half-baked. Take Bruce and Miranda Tate's hook-up in Wayne Manor; it comes out of nowhere because Nolan doesn't really devote any time to establishing sexual tension. Once we learn Tate's new identity, this romance seems even more contrived.
