9 Interesting Parallels Between Cannibal Holocaust And The Mondo Movie

7. Genuine Atrocities

The Last Road To Hell The missing documentary crew were established Mondo veterans. They had recorded a documentary called The Last Road to Hell in which they appear to have encountered and filmed genuine deaths. This is not just make believe, for this part of the film, Deodato shows actual executions from Nigeria and South East Asia. Cannibal Holocaust exists in a multitude of cuts and versions worldwide and depending on which version you get, you may find very short footage of the above real life executions or else a longer version that shows real bodies being piled up onto a truck and a close up of a dead man's face. The very inclusion of such material in the film surely makes it clear that Cannibal Holocaust is both a movie commenting on Mondo movies and is a Mondo movie itself as it exploits footage that wouldn't be out of place in the Faces of Death franchise.
