The dry spell: Sonic The Hedgehog, Dark Crimes, The Bad Batch, Dumb and Dumber To, Kick-Ass 2

It's rare we get to witness a trainwreck as it occurs, so spare a moment for Jim Carrey, who sacrificed sanity, decency and talent all in the name of rubbernecking. It has to be some kind of performance art, right?

Unfortunately, it's not a joke. While Kidding is easily the best work Carrey has turned in in some time, it appears no one is paying much attention. We're too busy staring at a body of work that includes a badly accented performance in Dark Crimes and turning up in films no one asked for such as Dumb and Dumber To and Sonic the Hedgehog.

When his output isn't just bad, it's made worse when he publicly comments about it. Such was the case with the morally abhorrent Kick Ass 2, where he made an appearance only to condemn the film after the Stonybrook shootings. When he's not makining needlessly controversial statements, he's busy indulging in the comic's worst impulses, being loud, brassy and shrill.

Such personality traits once ingratiated audiences to Carrey, largely because they were accompanied by a fairly healthy dose of vulgarity. When it's family friendly, it's just brutal.

We guess it could be worse, he could still be trying to shill us Mr. Popper's Penguins.

Kenny Hedges is carbon-based. So I suppose a simple top 5 in no order will do: Halloween, Crimes and Misdemeanors, L.A. Confidential, Billy Liar, Blow Out He has his own website - thefilmreal.com - and is always looking for new writers with differing views to broaden the discussion.
