9 Most Badass Elder Masters In Martial Arts Movies
8. Old Master Oogway - Kung-Fu Panda Franchise (2008-?)
Throughout the Kung-Fu Panda franchise, old master Oogway has proven himself to be a capable and fearless martial artist, as well as a fountain of wisdom for all students at the ancient temple.
Through a flashback scene during the first movie, we even find out that it was Oogway who originally defeated and imprisoned Tai Lung, the main antagonist that represented such a major threat for the chosen one. But it's not until the third film that we discover the true extent of master Oogway's mystical abilities.
As we all know, the not-so recent Kung-Fu Panda 3 (2016) featured antagonist Kai, a raging bull (quite literally) who once was Oogway's star disciple. Another tragic example of a prodigy being corrupted by the temptation of power.
The beginning of this film is breathtaking, and it stunningly showcases the techniques that Oogway has mastered. Not too shabby for a centuries-old tortoise that seems to be sleepy most of the time.
Although Kai apparently defeats Oogway, the elder master pulls an Obi-Wan Kenobi kind of move and sacrifices himself so his apprentice Po can finally reach the next level. Because crushing emotional trauma is always a good source of motivation, I guess.
