The relationship between social media and movies has gotten increasingly close in recent years, with fandom feeding into marketing and studios attempting to take advantage of that to leverage social media klout into ticket sales. Unfortunately, social media is both a cesspool and an amplification tool that gives certain fans the perception that they have ownership rights over the art made to entertain them.

When a film is divisive, that usually means there's a "war" on Twitter (and elsewhere) between the rival factions, just as there is between DC fans and Marvel fans (though the reality is that LOTS of people like both and the warring factions are no more than mouth-breathing man-children seeking attention, love you).

That's been the case with Aquaman, which has bred such toxic responses from fans levelled at other fans - pro-DCEU fans criticising people who didn't like the film, mostly - that director James Wan was forced to ask them to stop publically. Imagine a world where that has to happen: we're letting ourselves down here.
