9 Most Unnecessarily Confusing Movies Ever Made

1. The Number 23 (2007)

Joel Schumacher's The Number 23 is probably the most pointlessly confusing motion picture ever made. It so desperately wants to appear clever and innovative, but fails at every turn. Its plot, razor-thin and needlessly convoluted, makes no sense. The big twist, which is supposed to answer all our questions, simply serves to generate more. This movie deserves to be blasted into the sun for one very simple reason, though: it tries to have you buy its ridiculous plot, despite knowing itself that it genuinely makes no sense at all. It must know that. The story, which centers around a writer who becomes obsessed with a mystical book and the number 23, stars Jim Carrey, though God knows what else but the promise of a huge paycheck caused him to sign on. Carrey continues to babble for the movie's entirety, as a vaguely interesting concept turns itself inside out for no reason. The point is, though, despite its confusing narrative, The Number 23 offers no prize. There's nothing to decipher. It's simply confusing for the sake of being confusing. Try and piece it together and you get nothing. It's almost as if somebody involved in its production said: "This plot really sucks. Make it as confusing as possible, and maybe nobody will notice." But we did. We really, definitely, totally did notice, and I'm not ready to forgive and forget just yet. An abomination in the truest sense, and - without a doubt - the most unnecessarily confusing movie to have ever graced our screens, it's The Number 23. Like this list? Agree? Disagree?
