9 Movie Deaths You Hear Off-Screen That You Probably Missed The First Time
1. VIKI - I, Robot
The primary antagonist of Will Smith's sci-fi action romp I, Robot is eventually revealed to be the rogue AI known as VIKI (Virtual Interactive Kinetic Intelligence).
VIKI decides that humanity represents a threat to its own survival and so plots to enslave the human race, forcing protagonist Del Spooner (Will Smith) to shut her down.
Spooner manages to do so by injecting nanites into her system core, which explodes, destroying her. And while we see VIKI destroyed on screen, it doesn't really qualify as a death considering that VIKI, an AI, was never actually alive in the first place.
Except an easily missed sound during the destruction of VIKI's core suggests otherwise. Listen closely when VIKI explodes and she lets out a distinctly human blood-curdling scream, suggesting she actually feels pain - or at least a digital interpretation of it. If that ain't dying, what is?
This of course all fits perfectly into the film's themes of technological advancement and the potential "free will" and "humanity" of robotic entities.
And yet, amid all the explosive mayhem it may have passed you by on an initial viewing.
