9 Movie Franchise Staples That Actually Came From Sequels

5. Jason's Mask (And Him Being The Killer) - Friday The 13th Part 2 And 3

A lot of horror franchises take a couple movies to properly find their feet, but Friday the 13th spent far longer than most before discovering its own identity. Though now Jason Voorhees - or even the image of his sinister hockey mask - can be used as shorthand for the iconic series, these elements weren't fully formed until three movies in.

Jason was mentioned in the original flick, but he wasn't the killer, as it was his mother Pamela who was seeking revenge on sex-pest camp counsellors. He turns up in the flesh in the second movie with the same murderous instincts as his mother, however even then he wears a far less terrifying bag on his head to hide his mangled face, rather than the signature hockey mask.

In fact, it took until the third movie before he added this key element to his costume, which doesn't sound too bad, but he'd only have it for two movies before being killed (briefly) off, anyway.
