9 Movie Franchises That Completely Spiraled Out Of Control
6. Planet Of The Apes
Like Saw, Planet Of The Apes kind of screwed itself over and made it basically impossible to keep the franchise going. Despite that, they kept it going. In Beneath the Planet of the Apes, a new astronaut, Brent, journeys into the Forbidden Zone and discovers a tribe of humans with telepathic abilities who worship a nuclear bomb. Wait, what? To make things crazier, Taylor from the original film returns at the end and in his dying moments detonates the bomb. The entire world is destroyed. Everyones dead. Thats it. But 20th Century Fox wasnt about to let the franchise die, and so a sequel was released the following year. In Escape From The Planet of the Apes, its revealed that Cornelius, Zira and Milo escaped before the destruction of the planet and traveled back in time to modern day Earth. What follows is a truly bizarre fish out of water movie in which the apes become celebrities in 1973 and try to adjust to modern culture. Then Zira randomly gets pregnant... Oh, and it ends with Cornelius and Zira, everyones favourite couple, being brutally shot to death. Their orphaned baby goes on to lead the ape uprising, as we see in Conquest of the Planet of the Apes. The original movie was a bit unclear about what happened to Earth and how the apes came to be the dominant species. Did they slowly evolve to be more intelligent and so they enslaved humans? Did humanity wipe itself out in a nuclear war and so apes took over? Nope. According to Escape from the Planet Of The Apes, it was because of a time loop. Cornelius and Zira traveling back in time from the ape society is actually what creates the ape society. So the franchise, which started with one of the most interesting science fiction movies ever made that never got too silly, has descended into an insane, complicated mess with atomic bomb worshipping, telepathic humans, time traveling apes and mind bending paradoxes. Thank God Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes got the series back to some sanity.
