9 Movie Heroes Who Lived Long Enough To Become The Villain

5. Denzel Washington - Training Day

It's easy to see why Denzel Washington is considered to be one of Hollywood's most sought-after heroes - he has a rare, natural charisma that just makes you want to root for him. Imagine how confused audiences were back in 2001, though, when the actor turned up in Training Day - a film which took Washington and undid everything you thought you knew about him in one fell swoop.

As twisted L.A. detective Alonzo Harris, Washington proved himself to be an unforgettable and foreboding force of moral corruption - a detestable cop whose actions across the span of the film (and interactions with his terrified partner, played by Ethan Hawke) are impossible to look away from: it's "swagger" defined.

Compared to the actor's heroic roles in films like Philadelphia and The Hurricane, watching Washington here... well, it's almost as though he'd be possessed by a demon or something. So fantastic was Washington in Training Day that they even gave him an Oscar for it; certified proof that whilst the good guys may prevail, it's the bad guys who linger in the memory banks.
