9 Movie Moments Completely Different In Other Countries

3. Lincoln Added Historical Context For Overseas Audiences

When Steven Spielberg was releasing his biopic Lincoln in 2012, he made the assumption that foreign audiences know precious little about the American Civil War, so he added extra footage to its international release to bring them up to speed.

Anyone who saw the film outside of the US were greeted with a very different opening scene. A short history lesson played out via a series of cue cards and photographs of the country-dividing conflict, set against a John Williams score.

Spielberg clearly thought it was unreasonable to expect film fans to do homework ahead of a trip to the cinema, but no doubt the critically-acclaimed Lincoln inspired a few of them to brush up on their US history afterwards.
