9 Movies That Show How Christmas Can Be The Most Disastrous Time Of The Year

7. Jingle All The Way

Jingle All The WayThe Setup: Howard Longston (Arnold Schwarzenegger) wants to prove how great a father he is to his son Jamie (Jake Lloyd of Phantom Menace fame) by bringing him home the hottest Christmas toy of the year, the much-coveted Turbo Man doll. What Goes Wrong: As half-assed parents are wont to do, Howard doesn't try to buy the Turbo Man doll until the last second, not realizing he's set a nigh-on impossible goal to achieve. To make matters worst, Howard soon finds himself at odds with another desperate father, Myron Larabee (Sinbad), and the bitter rivals engage in an all out war to obtain their prize; Howard assaults goons dressed in Santa costumes, threatens the police with a pretend bomb (that turns out to be real), and mugs a completely innocent actor so he can pose as Turbo Man in a Christmas parade; basically, he becomes an unhinged criminal cutting a swathe of destruction wherever he goes. The Moral of the Story: Despite being a fairly awful example of Arnold's unfortunate attempt to transform himself from an action star into a comedic actor, Jingle All the Way does bring up some interesting points about how the commercialization of Christmas has turned a holiday meant to be about the spreading of goodwill into a cutthroat melee where people are prepared to trample each other to get their hands on the latest, greatest Christmas gift. You don't have to look any further than footage of this year's Black Friday mania to see how spot-on Jingle All the Way is in parts.
