9 Movies That Get Better The Deeper You Go

8. Vanilla Sky

Arrival Movie
Paramount Pictures

An English-language adaptation of Alejandro Amenábar's movie Open Your Eyes, Vanilla Sky is the Total Recall of a modern generation, mixing lucid dreaming with reality to the point that its difficult to discern which is which. It's a film that deserves more than watch to unspool all the layers and clues mixed into its production, planned from the outset by the filmmakers to be a movie that lends itself to reading closely.

Director Cameron Crowe said himself (in production production notes): “We constructed the movie, visually and story-wise, to reveal more and more the closer you look at it. As deep as you want to go with it, my desire was for the movie to meet you there.”

And this intention has been met with plenty of fan discourse about the truth of the movie. Some believe that the film's exploration of David's psyche is akin to Christianity, some believe that life and death have become merged and confused, some believe the whole thing is a dream - and there's clues for every option along the way.
