9 Movies That Get Better The Deeper You Go

6. Signs

Arrival Movie
Touchstone Pictures

Hear me out here - Signs as a surface level movie is a perfectly fine entry into the horror genre, playing on alien abduction and home invasion tropes to excellent effect as extraterrestrial beings come to harass a priest who has lost his faith, living with his two children and brother on an isolated farm.

Many complain the the film's climax - in which the aliens' weakness is revealed to be good old fashioned water - is nonsensical and dumb, undermining the idea that a superior species would come down to a planet consisting of over 70% of the stuff if they're so badly affected by it.

But truthfully, they're missing the point, as Shyamalan's movie is as much about subtext as it is a crazy alien showdown with a baseball bat.

Signs gets better the further you look into it as a whole new narrative comes into play, one where the aliens aren't actually interplanetary creatures from space, but demons instead. Graham's struggling relationship with god is what plays out as the movie progresses, with the actions of what would be hellspawn reigniting his faith by the end of the film.

The reading becomes more obvious the more times you watch and scrutinise the movie.
