9 Movies That Were Improved By Having No Money
2. Monty Python And The Holy Grail
Although Monty Python and the Holy Grail was made on a shoestring budget (with Pink Floyd, Genesis, and Led Zeppelin pitching in... seriously), Terry Gilliam and the rest of the Pythons found many brilliant ways of making that work to their comedic advantage.
Little things (like the so-bad-they're-hilarious killer rabbit effects) are scattered throughout the scenes, but the most enduring running gag of the whole film is also a result of these crafty budget solutions. King Arthur and his Knights of the Round table aren't nearly as majestic as the writers may have wanted them to be, largely because the sight of grown men galloping on their own to feet whilst other grown men follow behind them, banging coconuts together to simulate the sound of horse hooves, doesn't inspire a lot of nobility.
They wanted actual horses for all of those scenes, but simply couldn't afford them, especially not for the dozen or so cast members that would require them. The idea to use coconuts as a substitute came from a trick used in old radio shows. Python just took it a step further by cutting the crap and showing the people doing it on camera.
