9 Oddly Specific Things Zack Snyder Stole From The Original Superman Movies
4. The Specfic Jor-El Elements
As everyone always goes to great pains to point out, Superman: The Movie was a highly influential movie. Sure, the content is rather of the time now, but in 1978 it was ground-breaking; it was the first big budget superhero film, treating the characters respectfully and carefully bringing the tone of the comics to the big screen. Although that's nothing compared to the profound and permanent impact it had on Superman as character. Several key elements introduced here for the film - specifically those in the Krypton elements of the story - subsequently made their way into the comics; the idea of the "S" emblem being the symbol of the House of El and Jor-El's hologram hanging out in the Fortress of Solitude. In retrospect, they seem obvious traits; the "hope" symbol deepens the sci-fi mythology, while Jor-El's presence plays up Clark's internal paternal conflict. It's therefore not all that surprising that they made their way into Man Of Steel too; as revisionist as the movie was, it did always strive to root its changes in some era of the comics. What was so interesting is that it made these two elements an even bigger deal than they were in the original Superman.
