9 Origin Movies That Actually Worked

8. Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes

After the Planet Of The Apes franchise became something of a bloated joke with too many sequels that seemed to lose their way and a weird, misguided reboot from Tim Burton, another go might not have captivated audiences at all.

But thanks to Rupert Wyatt's story-telling flair, exceptional effects work and great casting (particularly of Andy Serkis who breathed life into Caesar) it carved a positive space for itself.

Fundamentally, the film worked because it expanded on one of the most valued spoilers in movie history (it was Earth all along) and answered the lingering question everyone would have asked when that revelation came. How?

Looking back on it, it makes perfect sense, but it's only in the execution and the deep characterisations (including making Caesar the hero and humanity the villains) is how the promise became a successful reality.
