9 “Perfect” Casting Decisions That Went Horribly Wrong

3. Paul Giamatti As Aleksei Sytsevich/Rhino - The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Before the release of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 fans had no expectations of how Spidey villain Rhino should be portrayed on the screen, and with an actor such as Paul Giamatti lined up for the role they were no doubt completely justified in hoping for something interesting on the horizon. The heavy presence of Giamatti's Rhino in the trailer certainly suggested the character was going to have a substantial role in the movie.

With the character representing something entirely new in terms of big screen comic book villains, the Academy Award winning actor usually associated with far more intelligent and demanding roles promised to bring some gravitas to the role, and in casting such a celebrated actor it seemed as if Sony had big plans for Rhino. Sadly, the end result has gone down as one of the most laughably misjudged performances in any comic book movie, which in light of Arnold Schwarzenegger's Mr. Freeze is saying something.

What compelled Giamatti to put on that atrocious accent is anyone's guess (although some fingers no doubt pointed towards director Marc Webb). Worse still, Sony originally had plans to bring him back and punish fans even more with The Amazing Spider-Man 3, the cancellation of which is surely something we can all be thankful for.
