9 Predictions By Sci-Fi Movies That Eerily Came True

1. Identity Theft (The Net)

Minority Report
Columbia Pictures

Some of the tech on show in Sandra Bullock's cyber-mystery thriller The Net looks painfully '90s, though it was ahead of its time in one respect.

The idea of full-scale identity theft in an age of dial-up internet and floppy disks seemed far-fetched back then, but fast forward two decades and it's rife.

Bullock's Angela Bennett has her life deleted by a cyberterrorist organisation. Her credit cards no longer work and her social security number has been assigned to somebody else, which can happen if you fall for a phishing scam.

Although a box office success, The Net was critically panned when it arrived in 1995, but in hindsight, the movie deserves credit for highlighting issues such as cyberterrorism and identity theft, long before they became prevalent.
